Believe Believe New

I find it hard to escape the feeling that there is a bit of a movement, a quiet revolution even, afoot in the surfing world. Surfers, I reckon, are beginning to reclaim their culture, after years of having it dominated by surf industry marketing material. All those ads, posters, billboards, free dvds, contests, webcasts and signature model boardshorts have been cramming the space that would otherwise be occupied by what we might call surf culture, even art. With enormous budgets, the best photographers and film makers and all star sponsored teams at their disposal, the surf companies have left little room for the humble, independent surf artists to ply their trade – like pine forests dropping their needles and smothering all other new life. But no marketing budget can buy that elusive thing called mood, or collective consciousness, those subtle, unheralded shifts in direction that grip surfing from time to time.

“Believe,” by Mick Waters strikes another blow for the common surfer, a quiet, reflective statement of pure surfing devotion, as epitomized in the lifestyles of a fascinating cast of characters.

Go on, drop your cynicism and allow yourself the slow creep of goose bumps over your skin or a shiver up your spine and enjoy the ride. I, for one, am more than happy to believe.

Staring : Rasta, Dick Van Staalen, The Fitzgeralds, Steve Cooney, Travis Potter, Albert Falzon, Beau Young, Nat Young, The Duke and loads more

Thread Thread New

From the streets of the NYC to a rock-lined African point break, the Cote Basque to Pipeline, jam sessions to surf sessions-in saturated color and deep grained black-and-white, this latest Patrick Trefz production, Thread, promises, as we’ve come to expect, a study in contrasts.

Broken-up, shattered, then placed, no-stitched-back together, Thread takes-in five lives and showcases the art these individuals make of their time. Surfing well is a lifetime’s pursuit that’s expressed in subtleties: the pull of shoulders, the timing of breath. Unfolding on distant shores, each wave and location with its own flavor, Thread sews together experiences, offering a meditative look at the most fluid of the arts. Featuring Joel Tudor, Taylor Knox, Ray Barbee, Joe Curren and Tom Carroll.

Drive Through Caribbean Drive Through Caribbean New

Greg Browning, the creator of The Drive True series, brings us his latest hilariously entertaining and action packed installment Drive Thru Caribbean.
Donavon, Benji, Pat O, and Kalani welcome Aussie aerialist Yadin Nicol as they get wrapped up in some serious hijinks during their search for waves on the thousands of islets, reefs, and cayes strewn through the Caribbean. The crew had a chance to surf secret reefs in Puerto Rico that broke unlike any other wave they had encountered. While exploring Jamaica they hung with the local Rastas after long days of scoring warm water perfection on this tranquil island nation. The search lead them to the far reaches of the Caribbean where they ripped the famous Soup Bowls of Barbados. From riding dolphins to riding waves The Drive Thru Caribbean puts you in shotgun on this hysterical island hopping adventure.

"Anything and everything happens on a Drive Thru," says director Browning, "you really can’t anticipate any of it...you just kind of go with the flow."

Surfers: Donavon Frankenreiter, Benji Weatherley, Pat O’Conell, Kalani Robb, and Yadin Nicol.

Locations: Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Barbados

Glass Love Glass Love New

Over the last five years I have been involved in the creation of Glass Love.

Surfing in itself is a beautiful form; taking place in diverse locations with complex characters; I had ideas I wanted to articulate through motion and sound incorporating this. The process has been a lengthy one because to capture and present it with the meaning and feelings which surfers experience takes time. Also, the ideas I had changed with every wave that passed and with every person that I met and knew.

In the film I wanted to feature the generational link and love of surfing that gets passed down through families, in particular through the Curren and Purchase families. The sons are surfers and their fathers are surfer/shapers. It was nice to peek in on a small part of their relationships and how surfing makes them special. This, and the continued experimentation with board design were the highlights for me in making this film.

Overall in the making there were many stories, some made the cut - some did not. But rather than dissect them all here in words, I'll leave it to you to see the film.

I hope you enjoy it. We are all very blessed to be surfers.

Learn to surf with Andy Irons Learn to surf with Andy Irons New

Very much designed for the first time surfer (or anyone thinking about learning) this film pretty much covers all the basics step by step, from choosing a board, paddling, popping up, basic rules of the water etc in slightly over 30 minutes of tuition with world champ Andy Irons.
It's a solid alternative to your first lesson or a great head start if you're about to learn to surf - but beware the manufacturers write up (below) says "while surfers of all skill levels will find helpful tips on surfing better" which in our opinion simply isn't the case - this is really for first time surfers...

"Filmed in Hawaii and bro-hosted by TransWorld Surf Magazine's Chris Cote, Learn To Surf: The Fundamentals is sure to make you think, laugh, and paddle out today.
Andy Irons hosts this revolutionary, fun and hilarious instructional film on the fundamentals of learning how to surf.

Presented by Billabong and TransWorld Surf, Volume 001 in this collector's series focuses on the basics, while surfers of all skill levels will find helpful tips on surfing better."

Free as a Dog Free as a Dog New

Free as a dog - A true dog’s tale is the new Billabong film staring Joel Parko" Parkinson and his faithful hound, Trey. As seen through the eyes of the ever-loyal Trey, who is also the film’s narrator, the remarkable surfing talent of Joel Parkinson is showcased like never before.

"It’s an honour to be able to work with a surfer of this calibre. Parko is just so easy going and a regular good guy. From there the film title developed naturally as Parko and his dog Trey represent the true nature of the title," Jack McCoy reflects.

Starring alongside Parko will be Northern NSW grommets James Wood and Ellis Ericson, both of whom are earmarked to be the bright future of Australian surfing. Ellis and James play the token surf trip grommets, which have a tendency to be distracted by beautiful beach babes. For the past year Parko, Jack, Ellis and Woody have been chasing banks, swells and whispers all over the Australian coast, scoring some of the sickest sessions to go down in 2005.

Parko and Trey set off on a mission to help get a couple of groms (played by James "Woody" Wood and Ellis Erickson) back in line after they’ve gone off the rails in classic teenage puppy-love mode, fantasising about a beautiful dark-haired beauty played by Billabong free surfer Ashley Cheadle.

Free as a Dog - A true dog’s tale is the 24th film in a long line of classic surfing films by Jack McCoy. After its World Premier on January 2, 2006, at Sydney’s State Theatre, Free as a Dog will travel internationally with the Billabong Jack McCoy Surf Film Festival until August 2006. Be sure to scamper along to check out Free as a Dog when it comes to your town.

Hang-Longboard DVD Hang-Longboard DVD
Hang is a verb. It's a noun. It's a transitive state of being. It's an attitude a suspension of gravity and disbelief.

In surfing, 'hanging' means putting ten toes over the nose in the supreme act of finely honed edgework, the Hang Ten. To hang ten means to hang your hide out in full screaming trim down-the-line commitment with no leash and no net. It's a tightrope jig over the abyss dancing stylishly on the edge of disaster.

Black water- DVD Black water- DVD
"It's been two years in the making but Tim Bonython's Teahupoo documentary has finally arrived. Blackwater is the story of Teahupoo, a humble Tahitian village and a coral reef wave made from equal parts beauty and terror. The wave is undoubtedly one of surfing's most challenging and awe-inspiring waves, as Chris Malloy comments "That wave has changed surfing forever." The movie features fantastic surfing and commentary from a who's who of surfing, people such as Vetea David, Manoa Drollet, Shane Dorian, Kelly Slater, Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo, Bruce and Andy Irons, Layne Beachley and the Hobgood brothers to name a few. For the first time you can see and hear it all - the myths, the facts, the history, the stories, the consequences, and most of all, the unforgettable waves.

The music is top notch with artists such as Adam Freeland, Red Whyte, Butterfly Effect, Decoder Ring, Paul Kearney, Katalyst, Pre-Shrunk, Clotaire, Inked Factor, Nora Drenalin, Volatile, Not For You, Switchkicker, Strength in Numbers, Erther and Live, Love, Regret.
