Keypod™ review on NEW YORK TIMES website about.com: Jan 2006

Guide Rating - rating
When it comes to solving common problems of real surfers, this company seems to have its finger on the pulse of the surfing lifestyle. Extreme Horizon has created products that we have always wanted. One of which is the Keypod™, a portable, safe place to keep your keys while you grab a session. I got a hold of one and checked it out for you. Read the review.

The surf is going off! You screech into the parking lot, stash your valuables under the seat, rip on your wetsuit, and reach to hide your car keys behind the wheel or under your bumper or in some other cliche locale. Suddenly, you catch the glances of a surly bunch of punks brooding yards away. What now? You're in a sketchy situation. Should you go for it albeit that the afore mentioned ill-tempered riff raff may take this opportunity to rip your rig? You can always search for a landmark by which to bury your keys (Not always good for keyless entry devices). Neither choice is optimal. Either way, simply considering this dilemma is costing some serious surf time. Wouldn't it be nice if someone would come up with some product to lock up your keys safely while you hit the surf?
Rising up from the land of King Arthur and crumpets, Extreme Horizon has solved one of the great problems of the common surfer. The product is the Key Pod which solves the above problem. Heartily constructed, this heavy duty storage unit is big enough to fit any key, yet small enough to covertly connect to any of your car's firm extremities (suspension coils, towing eye, or anywhere under your car's body).

In reality, I gave Extreme Horizon's Key Pod a go and found their claims warranted. After personalizing the three digit combination and choosing a secure location (I chose the ever lovin' suspension coil). I placed my keys, driver's license, and credit cards into the unit easily. I locked it securely and went for a sesh. Depending on where I secured the Keypod™ was usually visible, but there is no doubt my keys were the safer for it. In my pick up truck, I settled on metal loop in the bed and keep it there always. It's easy to get to and a bit hidden. I found that better than having to reach under my vehicle and it would be more obvious if anyone did decide to tamper with it.

Honestly, it would take a buttload of work to get into this little metal safe, and it holds more than I expected, and is sold as a rock. In my opinion, I like the idea of the Key Pod, find it practical and very useful in the daily life of a surfer, solidly constructed, and definitely lived up to Extreme Horizon's claims.

"I think Lockjaw is a great innovative idea. Its a real pain taking surfboards in and out of the house, I know that dragging them all round europe and if you can leave them on top of the car knowing that they are secure it can only be good" Grishka Roberts 2x European surf champion and Head instructor of Quiksilver/Roxy surf school Newquay

"On my recent camping/surfing holiday to Cornwall, some lowlife attempted to steal my boyfriends surfboard off my car roofrack. It happened on the campsite where we were staying, it wasn't even late and we had just gone for a shower, when we returned we found the straps on the roofrack had been cut, but thanks to the lockjaw the board was left in place. Unfortunately the couple camped next to us weren't so lucky and had one of their boards stolen that same evening. So £20 and some minor hassle attatching the lockjaw saved us from having £300's worth of board stolen, money well spent!" -Sian Sept 05

Sunset Surf "LOCKJAW" Surfboard lock Review- May 2005

"Lock Jaw- we put it to the Sunset Surf test! It's easy enough to fit, although a bit of a pain in the backside having to take your fins out, but with our fcs fins it's no major issue. And realistically, would you rather spend 5 minutes getting your fins out, or the rest of your holiday without your board?! Once fitted to your board, it's just a matter of finding something to lock your board too. Usually if you have a car you can find something on the car, the tow hoop, not the roof rack! As these can all too often be removed as well! From start to finish, we fitted our lockjaw in under 10 minutes, and no doubt with practice and less chatting it would have been much less. The lockjaw is promoted as more of a deterrent than a complete anti-theft kits, extreme horizon quite rightly point out that a determined thief can and will steal anything he really wants to. There really can be no doubt that the lockjaw does the job it was intended for. It stops the opportunist thief. Now you might feel that it's a waste of £25 or there about, but when you stop and consider the cost of a new board, that's one thing, but if you are on a surfing holiday and you loose your board, you may well be completely stuck! A holiday often costs as much if not more than a new board, all for the sake of spending £25. To sum up, it's a sad fact you have to lock everything down these days, but a fact it is. The lockjaw will save you time, and heartache for very little effort. It's strong, durable and a well made and well designed idea which is going to prove very popular I suspect. If I didn't have the use of the Sunset Surf van I would definitely get one of these, to date I either stash them on the roof of the car / van and hope no ones nicks the boards, but do you want to take that risk? There is no real downsides to the lockjaw, if you are too lazy to fit it, they you have no one to blame if your board gets nicked, but if it gets nicked with the lockjaw on, at least you can say they won't have taken it easily, and your insurance company may well be more inclined to pay up if your board was locked up. (That's not a factual statement, just an assumption on our behalf) The lockjaw, the first Sunset Surf approved security device for surfers! "

Magic Seaweed.com "LOCKJAW" Surfboard lock Review- Feb 2005

"Simple, well made and affordable. Essentially a small anodised gizmo that screws into yourFCS fin plug (there is a version to fit a longboard fin box) and allows you to use the cable and padlock provided to lock the board to your roof rack (or anywhere else). Having tried it out it's simple to use and the build quality is reassuringly high. All the parts are completely rust proof which is going to be vital with sea water in the mix. Short of tearing out the fin plug there is no way your board is going anywhere. Good for the top of the car - but also a touch for those apres surf sessions abroad where the board ends up spending the evening outside the local bar...."
