Peter Mel won the Mavericks Invitational big wave surf contest, a 24-competitor Big Wave World Tour event, at the mental reef near Half Moon Bay, California on Sunday. The conditions by Mavericks standards were small, but it was sunny and a Sunday so the more cynical may say it was run not because of wave size but because of potential audience size? Either way Mel charged and took home $12,000.
